Greece by Gemma

Greece has the longest coastline in Europe and is the southernmost country in Europe. The mainland has mountains, forests, and lakes. Greece is best known for the thousands of islands dotting the blue Aegean Sea to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Ionian Sea to the west. It is known for the Birthplace of Democracy, the Beginnings of Philosophy, Geometry and the Pythagorean Theorem, Western Medicine and the Hippocratic Oath, the Olympic Games, Drama and the Theatre of Epidaurus, Greek Mythology and Mount Olympus, Cartography and Map Making. I would describe Greece as: storied, brave, magical, heroic, beautiful, powerful, legendary, modern and glorious. These are 5 facts about Greece that you didn’t know about:

Greece is one of the sunniest places in the world. ...

The Greek Isles are home to over 6000 beautiful islands. ...

Greece is home to 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. ...

80% of Greece is made up of mountains. ...

Greece has an impressive coastline… about 16,000 kilometers. ...

Santorini has different color beaches.

 Grill Thursday

fat  thursdayby Angela

Apokries (Carnival season) in Greece is made up of three themed weeks of celebration. These weeks are, in order: Prophoní (Preannouncement Week'), Kreatiní(Meat Week'), and Tiriní (Τυρινή, 'Cheese Week'). Tsiknopempti is the Thursday of Kreatiní and represents a highlight in a weeklong celebration of meat consumption. The festivities on Tsiknopempti revolve around large outdoor parties where massive amounts of meat are grilled or roasted.

Often Tsiknopempti like celebrations will occur again, generally on a smaller scale, the following Sunday which marks the final day meat can be eaten before the beginning of the Great Lent, the strict fasting season that leads up to Easter.[3] In the Greek Orthodox tradition, fasting on Wednesdays and Fridays is important, therefore Thursday is the best day for Tsiknopempti. Tsiknopempti is celebrated 11 days before Clean Monday (often referred to in English as Ash Monday, to allude to Ash Wednesday in the West, however in Orthodox tradition there is no imposition of ashes). After Tsiknopempti, the next major celebration of Apokries is Tirofágos (during the week of Tiriní which focuses on the consumption of cheese, eggs, and dairy.

Grill Day by Dora

Tsiknopempti is a custom created in Greece. On Grill Day the whole family gathers, bakes or orders and eats together.

A special occasion is its celebration in Patras during the Patras Carnival, where hundreds of Patras people set up barbecues in every part of the city from noon on Swan Thursday, even outside their shops.

My family and I bake and dress in our carnival costumes. Grill Day takes place a few days before the beginning of the great fast of Lent.

Grill Day by Gemma

Grilling usually involves an amount of direct, radiant heat, and tends to be used for cooking meat and vegetables quickly. Food to be grilled is cooked on a grill (an open wire grid such as a gridiron with a heat source above or below), using a cast iron/frying pan, or a grill pan (similar to a frying pan, but with raised ridges to mimic the wires of an open grill).

Heat transfer to the food when using a grill is primarily through thermal radiation. Heat transfer when using a grill pan or griddle is by direct conduction. In the United States, when the heat source for grilling comes from above, grilling is called broiling. In this case, the pan that holds the food is called a broiler pan, and heat transfer is through thermal radiation.

Direct heat grilling can expose food to temperatures often in excess of 260 °C (500 °F). The Maillard reaction only occurs when foods reach temperatures in excess of 155 °C (310 °F).

Studies have shown that cooking beef, pork, poultry, and fish at high temperatures. Grilling is often presented as a healthy alternative to cooking with oils, although the fat and juices lost by grilling can contribute to drier food. In the United States, oven pan broiling refers to a method of cooking inside an oven on a broil pan with raised ridges, where the heat can be applied from either above or below.

Grill day is a national Greek celebration. It depends on when easter is going to be. Some people dress in costumes to celebrate carnival day.

A day in the snow

by Panos...

by Mary S.

          Hi, Anna

On Tuesday we woke up and saw snow everywhere! It was perfect! Then, we got dressed and went outside. We played snowball fight and returned home after a while. We went up to the roof and we had a perfect snowfall but in the afternoon the snow melted. In Athens it hadn’t snowed since 2008 so our joy was great.
